August der Starke – August the Strong - (1670-1733), was the elector-prince of Saxony and is the most well-known ruler from the Wettin family. He was largely responsible for the growth of Saxony’s art, culture and architecture and chose Dresden as his city of residence, which led to its transformation into a Baroque stronghold.  The Dresden skyline was thus transformed, as August had magnificent castles and palaces built, many of which still exist today.
